There are two important things you should know regarding this book choice:
- Esther Hicks channels the angel/entity “Abraham” who speaks through her to Jerry, her husband, though Esther does not like the term”channeling”. It is more about having access to information on another plane of existence. This book is a discussion between Jerry and Abraham.
- Esther Hicks practices the Law of Attraction which differs from the Law of Assumption but there are many overlaps.
The Vortex is the first book in a 7-book series by Esther and Jerry Hicks in which Abraham is the true mouthpiece. In this first book, Abraham outlines how we have the ability to create the realities of our wildest dreams through two main mechanisms: Our Emotional Guidance System and The Vortex.
According to Abraham, we have an emotional guidance system innate within each of us that enables us to discover what we truly desire. If something bad happens to us, then we discover something we do not like. If something good happens to us, we find something that brings us joy. We can then use that guidance system to orient our thoughts toward what we know brings us joy. When we preoccupy our thoughts with what makes us happy, we create (or attract) more of what fulfills us. The problem with most people is that they unintentionally tend to dwell on what hurts them, attracting more of what they don’t want in the process.
“If you will withdraw your attention from the unwanted and put it upon something you do like, your pain will subside. As you focus longer still upon something that you do want, no only will you no longer feel pain, but you will feel positive emotion, such as interest or eagerness or happiness.”
When you are experiencing joy with intentional and directed thought, this is when you enter “The Vortex”, an alignment with yourself and with Source. When you suffer for any reason, you are not in alignment. While you are in The Vortex, you are more powerful than ever, and can attract whatever you desire. When you are in The Vortex, this is when you tell Source what you want, and you shall receive. You can do so with prayer or with imaginal scenes. According to Abraham, joy is the most important thing in the Law of Attraction. You are meant to follow what makes you happy and create more of it. You are meant to be abundant, all of you.
“But when you are focused completely upon what you do want – thereby releasing all resistance or opposition to your own desire – you are engaging the Energy that creates worlds, and your power of influence is mighty. In your connection to, and allowance of, your true power, your influence to bring others into their own power is great.”
While Eckhart Tolle teaches that time is the source of all pain, Abraham says that your relationships with others, which is actually your relationship with yourself, is the source of all pain – because you tend to dwell on what hurts. In essence, Abraham is speaking of EIYPO (Everyone is you pushed out – a Neville Goddard concept) and that all of your relationships are essentially mirrors. If you want to change a relationship with someone, for example and according to Abraham, you think positively about that person and focus on what you love about them, rather than the negative, and if you’re in the Vortex and have achieved alignment, that person will no longer be able to show you what you do not like. You will have influence over them.
Unlike the Law of Assumption, Abraham does not assert that you can select a different reality. Nor does he say that you can change a person – only influence them to act with a better vibrational frequency. When you are angry with someone and think negatively of someone, that energy will attach to that person, and influence them in a negative way, bringing more of what you do not like.
There is still a big overlap with this book and the Law of Assumption including reality mirroring your beliefs, the importance of your dominant thoughts, the fact that you cannot serve two masters (choose to think positively or negatively), and that you have the power to create the abundant reality of your dreams. While there may be some differences, one of the key takeaways we can all use from this book is to bring JOY to your SAtS and imaginal scenes.
“Nothing is more important than feeling good.”
This is an absolutely lovely book that warms the soul. I highly suggest it.
